Stephen P. Lawson of Smyrna, GA died Thursday, April 23, 2015 of complications from colon, and liver cancer. Rather than offering a standard obituary of accomplishments, Stephen chose to write the following: "By the time you read this, my ongoing process of sanctification has been short-circuited by death, no doubt an ailment my gastroenterologist would consider life threatening. My belief is that I have asked forgiveness of everyone I have either wronged or offended as I have attempted to live out my last years in peace and repentance. I correctly made the two wisest decisions of my life; the person I was to spend my life with here on earth, Elyse Harvey Reinhard Lawson, and the person I was to spend eternity with after I died, Jesus Christ. In the former, I married my best friend and the nicest person I ever knew. We were married for 48 years. Blake Stiles Lawson is our son and a person of great integrity. My greatest honor in life was being Harvey's husband and Blake's dad. I have lived a wonderful life and truly, want for nothing. I experienced the Lord in the middle of my circumstances and He was faithful to work all things together for the good for those who love Him and are called according to His purposes. His mercy endures forever, and I can depend on His saving grace. I have been blessed beyond measure. Now I join the cloud of witnesses who have preceded me in proclaiming: "Glory to the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever unto the ages of ages." Amen." Born in New York City on May 25, 1937 to Lillian Pollack Lawson and Sanford Everett Lawson he was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Rosemary L. Strickman. He attended Kentucky Military Institute and graduated from the Franklin School in New York City. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to New York University, a Division 1 school at the time, and played his freshman and sophomore years before seriously injuring his knee. Married in 1966 to the former Elyse Harvey Reinhard of Atlanta, they settled in Atlanta. After several life changing events, Mr. Lawson authored a bestselling Christian book, Daddy Why Are You Going to Jail, released by Shaw Publishers in 1993. The book was updated in 2014. Additionally he authored several novels: The Arrangement and The Fix as well as two non-fiction books: Obama: He Reminds Me of the Person I Used to Be and Schmucks and Other White Collar Criminals . All books are available as E-books on Amazon. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 29 at 10:30 am at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 3431 Trickum Road, Marietta, GA 30066. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Reflections Ministries, Inc. in Atlanta and the Orthodox Christian Mission Center located in St. Augustine, FL.
Elyse Harvey Lawson is a Christian woman having come to faith in 1979. Married in 1966 to Stephen Lawson, they became parents to their only child, Blake Lawson in 1974. Prior to marriage, she attended Georgia State University while dancing with the Atlanta Civic Ballet, taking parts in local theater productions and making TV commercials. After returning to Atlanta from New York and now married, she entered the world of volunteerism and found she had untapped organizational and fund raising abilities. She served on various boards of arts organizations and served as president of Theater Atlanta Women’s Guild and the Alliance Theater Women’s Guild. She is a sustaining member of the Atlanta Junior League and DAR. By 1979 their world had turned upside down. Stephen sentenced to eight-years in prison for securities’ violations; Harvey was raising Blake as a single parent and working fulltime. Encountering the living God in Jesus Christ at nearly the same time in different cities, all three were radically changed from the inside out. After Stephen returned home from prison after only eighteen-months at Eglin Federal Prison Camp, their lives were focused on returning to normality with long bouts of just trying to survive. Their love of God and their love for each other sustained them. The Lord through His steadfast love allowed them to live above the circumstances of life and to see the light at the proverbial end of the tunnel. Harvey and Stephen were married close to 49-years prior to Stephen’s death in 2015.
Delaying college for one year, Blake Lawson enrolled in Youth with a Mission’s (YWAM) Discipleship Training School and the School of Evangelism which encompasses a full year. Both schools have an outreach to a foreign country to put into practice what was learned in the classroom. After YWAM he attended Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA and graduated with a degree in Communications. During his college years he was a cast member of the TV show, Saved by the Bell, The New Class which ran every Saturday on NBC. Additionally, during his junior year he did an internship with a large real estate firm in Santa Barbara and loved it. He sat for his real estate license in California and eventually returned to Atlanta and was able to transfer his license to Georgia.
While enjoying a career in real estate he kept an eye out for his parent’s travel business and realized they were encountering competition from the internet. He encouraged them not to fear the internet but to embrace it. Blake created a website for his parents business, www.MissionaryAirFareSearch.com for international travel which was the first website for missionaries, church related travel and short term mission groups. Blake established an enviable success for his family’s twenty-five year old travel company and is a classic example of new and innovating ideas replacing old ways of doing business. Blake relates he knows several people like him who entered their family business and thrived in the E-technology environment. Blake shared, “As the travel agency business changed, we evolved and flourished. We changed with the times.”
At age thirty-two Blake was invited to become the youngest member of the “Chancellor’s Council for the Future of the University of the Nations, Kailua-Kona, HI. He would meet with the other thirty-six members to provide oversight and insight for the worldwide ministry of YWAM.
Lawson continues to be involved with his family’s business but due to medical issues his role is on a limited scale.
